Best Hikes and Places to Explore in Joshua Tree
If you’ve found your way here, then you’re either in Joshua Tree or planning a trip soon and honestly? Amazing choice! It’s one of my all-time favorite places for hiking, photography and a dose of rest and relaxation. I actually lived there for three years and, in that time, I hiked, climbed and explored the park. So if you’re wondering what hikes are worth your time, or looking for cool places to explore, let this be your go-to guide.
Let’s start strong. If you’re up for a challenge and want a great view of Joshua Tree, then Ryan Mountain is the move. The trail brings you over 1,000 feet in just 1.5 miles, which means yes, it’s steep, yes, you’ll be winded and yes, your legs will burn. But the view from the top? Worth every step. It’s the hike I always brought family and friends on when they visited, partly because it’s a solid workout and partly because the view is so stunning.
Next on my list is Hidden Valley Trail. It’s a hike I would recommend to literally everyone. It's short (just one mile), super scenic and easy enough to do with kids, your not-so-outdoorsy friends, or anyone who just wants a cute desert moment without breaking a sweat. You’ll walk through a valley surrounded by towering rocks and dotted with Joshua Trees, yucca, and the occasional wildlife sighting (hi, bunnies!). It’s a great trail for photos that don’t involve a red, sweaty face (looking at you, Ryan Mountain).

If you're looking to go beyond the trails and really immerse yourself in the landscape, Joshua Tree has a few spots that are perfect for wandering, climbing, and experiencing the desert. One of my favorite spots is Hemingway, tucked near the park entrance. While it’s not an official hiking trail, its so fun! It’s quiet, shaded and full of hidden nooks to climb or just sit and soak up the desert stillness. It’s a great place to explore at your own pace, especially if you love a little boulder scrambling with your desert views.

Another favorite spot of mine to explore is Hall of Horrors. While there is a marked trail, I usually ditch the path and wander through the boulders, scrambling and climbing like a big kid. It’s an incredible place to explore and the rock formations are photo-worthy.
Finally, you cannot skip Cholla Cactus Garden. It’s basically a cactus wonderland! There is a short boardwalk trail that loops through the garden and its one of the most photogenic spots in the park.
